Greek and Roman Civilizations In examining the impact that the ancient world has had on modern Western civilization, the two ancient civilizations which are frequently understood as having had the greatest influence are Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. These two civilizations would eventually come to shape much of what would become the modern European culture, politics and society, and by extension, a vast proportion of global culture and society. In examining the trajectory of modern history in an era of globalization of Western ideas and modes of living, the importance of these civilizations in world history is extensive, contributing to cultural, political and social trends which may well dominate the globe in the future. This paper will compare and contrast these two civilizations concerning two of the major elements of society: government and religion. These two areas are important when examining the impact of a particular civilization, because they provide two different perspectives on a particular cul ture. While the examination of politics allows the power and influence of culture to be understood, the analysis of religion allows the cultural influence of people to be traced. The Fall Of The House Of Usher - 1612 Words

The second message of Poe s The Fall of the House of Usher is that moral disintegration should necessarily lead to destruction as a sort of mundane punishment. Usher blames himself for burying his sister before death so he expects punishment. One conclusion to be drawn from the final scene is that Roderick dies of fear. Madeline appears in her coffin and rushes upon him and he falls to the floor a corpse. Symbolically Madeline is just a physical embodiment of Roderick’s fears and punishment. With Roderick s death, the bloodline of the family falls and the house collapses all at the same time at the story’s conclusion. The house could be thought of as a third member of the Usher family: Roderick, Madeline, and the House. Hoeveler states that the house itself is like a self-created grave, wherein Roderick â€Å" literally walls his abjected self/his ‘sister’ into.† (Hoeveler 394) Louise Kaplan sees that there is an ambiguous relationship between the destruction of the house of Usher and the moral order. It appears to her that there is an incestuous relationship between the twins and this means moral disintegration. So such destruction of the house and death of the twins can be an attempt to preserve the moral order. (Kaplan 52) Poe makes death and decay frightening because he reveals them to be the hidden destiny of everyone and everything. And this leads to the third message that death is the truth we all fear. An Inspector Calls Playscript Essay Flashback: Mrs.Birling and Eva Smith are my two characters involved in this play script. Eva smith seeks help from the Brumley Womens Charity Organisation, who Mr.Birling is a member of.  Playscript  Set in the comfortable surroundings of Mrs.Birlings house, in the living room, Mrs.Birling is having a meeting with other members of the brumley womens charity organisation. Eva Smith, looking very exhausted and upset, knocks on door but soon sees a meeting in progress. The lighting is bright in the centre and shining on Mrs.Birling and all of the members although it is dark in the other rooms. It is a dark and windy night with showers occurring frequently. Mrs.B: The purpose of todays meeting is to discuss any future improvements we could make to this organisation. Ladies, discuss ideas with your fellow members.  All of the ladies gather together at a solid and high quality wooden table at the centre of the stage. Meanwhile, Mrs.Birling is rocking on a chair directly north of the wooden table. The lighting becomes brighter and focuses on the women sitting at the table.  Mrs B (sounding rather relaxed and proud that she is hosting this meeting) Now ladies, any of you have any suggestions for improving our facilities. There is a short pause and 2 of the women sitting around the table take a drink of water.  Member 1: We could do with some new members; were quite short of members at the moment. Today we struggled with only 7 members available to help and it was a busy day.  Member 2: Yes, that would be good, but we would have to search and find just the right women for the job. No useless women, we need solid ladies for the job. Past experience would have to be a must aswell. Member 1: Yes, a good idea. With a little planning and thought it shouldnt be too hard.  Mrs.B: (appearing relieved) Yes, this is a fairly good idea and hopefully it shall work out. Now, I think well call it a day from here. I could do with a light sherry.  All the members leave Mrs. Birlings house in an orderly line. Eva, sitting on a bench outside Mrs.Birlings house, now gets up and knocks at the door of Mrs.Birlings house.  Edna (Mrs.Birlings maid) opens the door.  Eva: (sounding nervous) Hello, may I speak to a committee member or advisor please? Edna: (loudly) Madam, someone for you!  Mrs.B: (after a pause, looking moody after another disruption and leaning back in her rocking chair) Bring the person in. Make it snappy, I need a rest  Eva is standing in front of Mrs.Birling, appearing to be very shaky and has slight tears under her eyes.  Eva: I came to ask for help in my situation.  Mrs.B: (now leaning forward on to her desk, with a louder tone of voice) Sit down, you silly girl! Tell me more about your situation.  Eva takes a seat on a comfortable red sofa opposite Mrs.Birling although she does not seem to be relaxed yet and not leaning back on the sofa and showing tension on her face. Eva: I have been fired from a job which was my only hope in surviving. I have nowhere else to turn and have no money to live on. I have tried other organisations but nobody is willing to accept me. This is my last hope.  Mrs.B: Right, but I would need to know more than what you have just told me in order for you to get any help from the committee at all.  Eva: well, I was supposed to get money from a man I knew and he promised he would give it to me. However, it didnt work out and everything turned against me. Mrs.B: Right, so youre here to ask me for money, arent you?  Eva: (now with a hint of slight relief) Yes please, madam. Once out of the front gate, Eva breaks into tears and slowly walks off into the distance to the left of the stage, her figure gradually vanishing under all the rain and fog.

After a brief spell as Johnny And The Moondogs, the band rechristened themselves the Silver Beetles, and, in April 1960, played before impresario Larry Parnes, winning the dubious distinction of a support slot on an arduous tour of Scotland with autumnal idol Johnny Gentle. By the summer of 1960 the group had a new name, the Beatles, dreamed up by Lennon who said 'a man in a flaming pie appeared and said you shall be Beetles with an a'. A full-time drummer, Pete Best (b. 1941, Liverpool, England), was recruited and they secured a residency at Bruno Koschminder's Indra Club in Hamburg. It was during this period that they honed their repertoire of R&B and rock 'n' roll favourites, and during exhausting six-hour sets performed virtually every song they could remember. Already, the musical/lyrical partnership of Lennon/McCartney was bearing fruit, anticipating a body of work unparalleled in modern popular music. The image of the group was changing, most noticeably with their fringed haircuts or, as they were later known, the 'mop-tops', the creation of Sutcliffe's German fianc?e Astrid Kirchherr. The first German trip ended when the under-age Harrison was deported in December 1960 and the others lost their work permits. During this turbulent period, they also parted company with manager Allan Williams, who had arranged many of their early gigs. Followi ng a couple of months' recuperation, the group reassembled for regular performances at the Cavern Club in Liverpool and briefly returned to Germany where they performed at the Top Ten club and backed Tony Sheridan on the single 'My Bonnie'. Meanwhile, Sutcliffe decided to leave the group and stay in Germany as a painter. The more accomplished McCartney then took up the bass guitar. This part of their career is well documented in the 1994 feature film Backbeat. In November 1961, Brian Epstein, the manager of North End Music Store, a record shop in Liverpool, became interested in the group after he received dozens of requests from customers for the Tony Sheridan record, 'My Bonnie'. He went to see the Beatles play at the Cavern and soon afterwards became their manager. Despite Epstein's enthusiasm, several major record companies passed on the Beatles, although the group were granted an audition with Decca on New Year's Day 1962. First the narrator decides to quit his horse racing job because of a promise he made to his mother. Patrilineal vs. Matrilineal Succession Patrilineal societies, those that connect generations through the father’s line, dominate the world’s culture. And most sociologists would argue that we still live for the most part under a patriarchy, in which men serve as heads of almost every important social, cultural, and political institution. But a few cultures throughout history were matrilineal and therefore connected generations through the mother’s line. These cultures included many Native Americans, certain South Americans, and the Spanish and French Basque. And although matrilineal law is not codified in the Torah, the Jewish Oral Tradition as written in the Mishnah outlines an overwhelmingly matrilineal society: a child of a Jewish mother is always Jewish, regardless of the faith of the father. Patrilineal Succession For most of history, patrilineal succession (a patrilyny) dominated family units. Names, property, titles, and other valuables were traditionally passed on through a male line. Females did not inherit, unless there were no male heirs. Even then, distant male relatives would inherit over close female relatives like daughters.  Property passed from father to daughter indirectly, usually through dowries on a daughter’s marriage, which was paid to and came under the control of her husband or her husband’s father or another male relative. Matrilineal Succession In matrilineal succession, women inherited titles and names from their mothers, and passed them down to their daughters. Matrilineal succession did not necessarily mean that women held the power and property and titles. Sometimes, men in matrilineal societies were the ones who inherited, but they did so through their mother’s brothers, and passed their own inheritances along to their sisters’ children. The Role of Women in Promoting Patrilyny While most theorists believe that patriarchal systems came to dominate both Western and non-Western cultures through the use of force, social anthropologist Audrey Smedley’s research with the Birom people of Nigeria led her to posit that it might, in fact, be women themselves who willingly invented many features of the patrilyny. Furthermore, she argues, men’s roles are actually more constricted than women’s roles, and that women have significant decision-making within such organization. Moving Away From the Patrilyny In many ways, modern western culture has adopted more matrilineal-like structures, especially in poor communities where men are marginalized for other cultural reasons- race or immigration status, for instance.  The modern American imprisonment of a large percentage of the black male population means that many children do not have as much contact with fathers and other male relatives. So too have various property rights laws over the past several hundred years served to diminish the control that men have over women’s inherited property and women’s right to choose who inherits their property. In western cultures, it has become more common for women to keep their birth names after marriage, even if a substantial percentage of those women give their husband’s name to their children. Training the Female Athlete

In this Podcast, Peter Melanson interviews Diane Vives – director of Vives Training Systems in Austin, Texas, on training female athletes. Peter asks Diane a series of questions in regards to female athletes versus male athletes on how to train better, the differences between training, and the types of injuries caused from the training between men and women athletes. Diane answers with questions with research and studies that supports her theories and reasoning’s to her ways of training the female athlete.Diane explains that as trainers and coaches that we need to recognize with men and female athletes that we are seeing specific trends with female athletes that we need to do a better job at recognizing. The evidence is that the females are lacking certain performance activities and more importantly that there are a tremendous amount of injuries in female athletes. The research is back this up and it also shows that as coaches and trainers – there are no improvem ents to these cases.The amount of females are dropping out of sports and fitness all together because of the drastic injuries being caused to these female athletes such as ACL and knee injuries. Peter asked Diane, what are some of the specific things that affect the females the most? Diane reported that incidents of 4 to 6 times greater ACL and knee injuries with females versus male and some times the number increases up to 8-10 times greater when looking at non contact ACL injuries. She included, that we need ways to reduce this number because injuries such as ACL and knee injuries are drastic.She also included that another difference between male and female athletes are the lack of upper body strength in females. As coaches and trainers, they are afraid to train upper body for females because they are afraid that the females will bulky, which research and studies show that this is a myth. Diane emphasizes that this is extremely important. When we train female athletes, the intensi ty lacks because we do not have a higher expectations than we do have for male athletes.We have to approach the female and really create a higher expectation for training intensity, Diane explains. Research study show that when you put a female and male athlete together and make everything relatively the same with body, mass size – the size of the athlete, and you ask the female athlete what they perceived their level of intensity is. The females consistently felt like they were training at a much higher intensity than the males did. Peter asks Diane what are some examples for coaches and trainers to change to make a positive impact on their female athletes right away.Diane explained that in order to make a dramatic change right away, one of the best way is to incorporate a dynamic warm up that includes flexibility, basic strength training and teaching plyometric. Diane includes the work â€Å"teaching’ because it is important that the athletes understand how to land and decelerate in order to reduce any injuries and to have progression.Including basic coordinative bimotor skills that include speed agility and quickness drills  is also important into incorporating into the female athletes training to dramatically make a change and even reducing the ACL and knee injuries by 73%. In summary, Diane explains that coaches and trainers need to look at the female athlete differently versus being afraid of getting bulky and to have higher expectations. Incorporating dynamic warm ups can significantly decrease the amount of injuries drastically in the female athlete. It’s important to focus both on the male and female athletes and to increase the expectations of the female athletes now versus in the past.

Social Constructionism Definition Social constructionism is the theory that people develop knowledge of the world in a social context, and that much of what we perceive as reality depends on shared assumptions. From a social constructionist perspective, many things we take for granted and believe are objective reality are actually socially constructed, and thus, can change as society changes. And the third was a critique of scientific practice, led by Thomas Kuhn, who argued that scientific findings are influenced by, and thus representative of, the specific communities where theyre produced- rather than objective reality. Social Constructionism Definition The theory of social constructionism asserts that all meaning is socially created. Social constructs might be so ingrained that they feel natural, but they are not. Instead, they are an invention of a given society and thus do not accurately reflect reality. Social constructionists typically agree on three key points: Knowledge Is Socially Constructed Social constructionists believe that knowledge arises out of human relationships. Thus, what we take to be true and objective is the result of social processes that take place in historical and cultural contexts. In the realm of the sciences, this means that although truth can be achieved within the confines of a given discipline, there is no over-arching truth that is more legitimate than any other. Language Is Central to Social Construction Language abides by specific rules, and these rules of language shape how we understand the world. As a result, language isn’t neutral. It emphasizes certain things while ignoring others. Thus, language constrains what we can express as well as our perceptions of what we experience and what we know. Knowledge Construction Is Politically-Driven The knowledge created in a community has social, cultural, and political consequences. People in a community accept and sustain the community’s understanding of particular truths, values, and realities. When new members of a community accept such knowledge, it extends even further. When a community’s accepted knowledge becomes policy, ideas about power and privilege in the community become codified. These socially constructed ideas then create social reality, and- if they aren’t examined- begin to seem fixed and unchangeable. This can lead to antagonistic relationships between communities that don’t share the same understanding of social reality. Social Constructionism vs. Other Theories Social constructionism is often placed in contrast with biological determinism. Biological determinism suggests that an individuals traits and behavior are determined exclusively by biological factors. Social constructionism, on the other hand, emphasizes the influence of environmental factors on human behavior and suggests that relationships among people create reality. In addition, social constructionism should not be confused with constructivism. Social constructivism is the idea that an individuals interactions with her environment create the cognitive structures that enable her to understand the world. This idea is often traced back to developmental psychologist Jean Piaget. While the two terms spring from different scholarly traditions, they are increasingly used interchangeably. Critiques Some scholars believe that, by asserting that knowledge is socially constructed and not the result of observations of reality, social constructionism is anti-realist. Social constructionism is also criticized on grounds of relativism. By arguing that no objective truth exists and that all social constructions of the same phenomena are equally legitimate, no construct can be more legitimate than another. This is especially problematic in the context of scientific research. If an unscientific account about a phenomenon is considered as legitimate as empirical research about that phenomenon, there is no clear path forward for research to make a meaningful impact on society. The Tesco brand first appeared in 1924. The name came about after Jack Cohen bought a shipment of tea from T.E. Stockwell. He made new labels using the first three letters of the suppliers name (TES), and the first two letters of his surname (CO), forming the word TESCO. According to the soft view of HRM, it explains employees to be a valuable asset to the company. (e.g., it is people that make the difference; the workforce is the most vital asset; human resources are the sole, real, sustainable, competitive advantage or edge.) On the other hand, the hard view of HRM considers that employees are resources to be managed effectively to achieve business objectives. According to Truss, those soft and hard approaches are based on opposing aims. The aim of soft model is to improve the competitive advantage of the company and the individual development of the employee based on the assumption that employees are viewed as a resource working to be trained and developed. In contrast, on the hard model employees are viewed as a cost that has to be managed and the aim of the model is to use the employees to achieve the organization goals. These approaches can also be viewed as tight and loose HRM, which are system based on compliance and commitment. Storeys Definitions The different perspectives can also be seen between the difference of personnel and HRM. Storey (1992) regarded HRM as a set of interrelated policies with an ideal HRM consisting of beliefs an assumption; strategic aspects; line management; key levers and dimension. For those who recognize a difference between personnel management and human resources, the difference can be described as philosophical. Personnel management is more administrative in nature, dealing with payroll, complying with employment law, and handling related tasks. Human resources, on the other hand, are responsible for managing a workforce as one of the primary resources that contributes to the success of an organization. Then, human resources are described as much broader in scope than personnel management. Personnel management is often considered an independent function of an organization. Human resource management, on the other hand, tends to be an integral part of overall company function. Personnel management is typically the sole responsibility of an organizations personnel department. With human resources, all of an organizations managers are often involved in some manner, and a chief goal may be to have managers of various departments develop the skills necessary to handle personnel-related tasks. While HRM concerns the human side of the management of enterprises and employees relations with their firms, Industrial Relations (IR) is comprised of certain actors, certain contexts, and ideology which binds the industrial relation system together and a body of rules created to govern the actors at the work place and work community. This term is a broader concept when compared with labour relations and it is concerned with the systems, rules and procedure used to determine the reward for effort and other conditions of employment. It can be viewed from tripartite perspective. Though the term IR seems to have a more macro view rather than micro view, it can be viewed as a one of the fields of HRM. Therefore we discuss IR under the theme of HRM. Several view points of HRM HRM is the management of people at work in an organization. Human resources are unique as they have expectation characteristics which are missing from all other resources. They have to be managed legally and ethically. Unilever practice this correctly. In management approach, HRM is a responsibility of every manager irrespective of his/her fields of interest a specialization. Though the Unilever has a human resource department led by a human resource manager, it has to serve all managers, non-managers and departments through it expertise.
